In July CAST will host a showcase of work by artists Bernard Irwin and Jesse Leroy Smith. In 2016 they undertook a year-long commission, ‘Picturing the Mines’, initiated by the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. As part of this commission Bernard and Jesse led workshops at CAST and throughout Cornwall, mapping the histories and landscapes of local mining districts and creating huge patchwork collages. CAST will host a showcase of old and new work relating to ‘Picturing the Mines’ and also show artworks from an earlier project, ‘Travelogue Kernow’, for which Jesse and Bernard created a touring printmaking studio and worked with communities to create pictorial portraits of their towns. This will be the first opportunity for the communities that helped shape these projects to see the work finally produced.
The Picturing the Mines showcase will travel to Launceston Town Hall, Tavistock Town Hall, Wadebridge Town Hall, CAST in Helston, Liskerrette Centre in Liskeard and PZ Gallery in Penzance throughout July.
