Irish artist Sean Lynch is interested in loose ends within stories: the lost footnotes and how to mediate their presence. The sculptures, installations, videos and publications generated in this process are speculative and open-ended in nature. Swaying between the anecdotal and informative, Lynch’s work is formed from seemingly disparate topics and themes such as stone carving, luxury car production, Irish folk rituals and fast food shops. He forensically investigates anecdotes and half-truths, uncovering marginalised stories and forming them into alternative arrangements of history to open up new understandings.
Sean Lynch lives in Dublin and studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. He represented Ireland at the 2015 Venice Biennale and has recently held solo exhibitions at The Rose Art Museum, Boston; Modern Art Oxford; Charles H. Scott Gallery, Vancouver; and Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, amongst others. He works at Askeaton Contemporary Arts alongside Michele Horrigan, organising artist residencies and exhibitions in southwest Ireland.
Over the last few years Lynch has been a regular visitor to Cornwall. He is preparing a new artwork for Groundwork, an international art programme developed and delivered by CAST.
Working in partnership with CAST, Falmouth University will host a lecture by Sean Lynch in the School of Art’s Guest Speakers series. Lectures are open to students and the public. Admission is free but booking is required via Eventbrite.
Groundwork is a three-year project bringing outstanding art and artists to Cornwall, supported by Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence scheme. Field trips, workshops and events during 2016 and 2017 are building towards a high-profile programme of commissions and sited work in 2018.
