Artist Simon Bayliss reveals his conflicting feelings about becoming a landscape painter in the South West. He discusses what he sees as the problem with a picturesque approach to landscape, while acknowledging his own desire for a painterly connection to place, and describes his struggle to develop an artistic identity that embraces his sense of regional aesthetics.
The talk is accompanied by a fleeting exhibition of collaborative plein air paintings, the result of an exercise using the principles of the ‘exquisite corpse’. A group of participants anonymously painted parts of the surrounding landscape, folded it over and passed it on, resulting in hybrid vistas. The exhibition is for one evening only.
