Join Kerry Holbrook and Ruth Klückers to learn the craft of seaweed pressing – a Victorian practice that captures the underwater beauty of seaweeds. During the workshop you will learn to recognise, identify and forage local seaweed species. The cultural history of seaweeds will be discussed, as well its agricultural, scientific and ecological uses.
You will have the opportunity to lay out your own design, which will then be loaded into a seaweed press to dry over the coming weeks. When the pressings are ready they will be sent to you by post.
Kerry and Ruth will also prepare a seaweed taster which showcases one of their favourite recipes.
Children accompanied by a responsible adult are welcome to attend.
The Seaweed Institute, is a local CIC, established with a dual mission: to promote sustainable engagement with seaweed; and to deliver educational programmes focused on seaweed’s ecological significance, cultural heritage, and varied uses. We seek to enhance foreshore accessibility, exploring seaweed’s role in blue food sovereignty and advocate for governance that safeguards against overexploitation of the foreshore. We have just moved to CAST in Helston and look forward to hosting a variety of public events in the space.
This activity is timed to coincide with Golden October, a weekend of creativity celebrating the renewal of CAST’s roofs. This significant programme of work, along with many of CAST’s learning activities during 2023 and 2024, has been made possible by funding by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Some renovations will continue through the winter months, but, at this important milestone, we want to invite the whole community to celebrate and enjoy the fruits of the investment in this special heritage building – a place for art, culture and learning that is open to all.
