Sessions devised by art students

With the support of Art Fund, CAST was delighted to provide two eight-month-long paid placements in 2024-2025 offering students in higher education opportunities to gain experience of working across CAST’s public and learning programmes. The placements involved working regularly with the Saturday Art Club, and assisting with schools Art Lab sessions and CAST’s public programme of workshops, talks and screenings.

Students Victoria (Vic) Sheldon and Francesca (Cesca) Pease were recruited and became a valued part of the Saturday Art Club delivery team. Towards the end of their time on the placements, Vic and Cesca were supported to design and deliver their own workshop sessions, putting their learning into practice.

Vic devised a session exploring playful and unexpected architecture. She led young people through the processes of working collaboratively to design and construct a large-scale prototype for a weird and wonderful imagined building.

Cesca’s session began with an exploration of the properties of microscope slides. Saturday Art Club members then experimented with drawing, mark-making, scale and magnification, using a variety of materials to create their own slides on acetate and then project them on the big screen in CAST’s black box screening space.
