Kaleidoscopes and Periscopes with Abigail Reynolds

In autumn 2024 the Saturday Art Club worked with artist Abigail Reynolds. Members constructed kaleidoscopes and periscopes and used them to look at the natural environment in new ways. The two Art Club groups walked to nearby green spaces to collect petals and seeds to incorporate into their kaleidoscopes, and experimented with photography and film to capture the effects and images created.

The workshops drew on Abigail’s sustained interest in more than human ways of looking, as explored in her recent commission for Chatsworth House Anthronauts, a series of sculptures that use lenses and mirrors to mimic the seeing experiences of different species: trilobites, songbirds and hawks.
