Werner Herzog’s Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972) follows the story of the doomed conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro. In the 1560s the legendary Pizarro led a band of men into the Peruvian rainforest, lured by stories of a lost city. Herzog uses a minimalist approach to dialogue to create a vision of madness and folly, set against the lush but unforgiving Amazonian jungle. The film is accompanied by a haunting soundtrack from experimental rock group Popol Vuh.
The film has been selected by artist and CAST studio holder Charlie Duck. Charlie’s practice explores process, chance and the agency of materials, particularly within the context of drawing and its expanded field. Alongside his practice, Charlie is a Lecturer on BA Drawing at Falmouth School of Art.
