Pina (2011) explores the life and work of the legendary German choreographer Pina Bausch. Archive footage of Bausch, who died just before filming began, is woven between sequences of her most notable works performed by members of Tanztheater Wuppertal, the ‘dance theatre’ she founded and directed. Filmed in a range of locations in and around the industrial city of Wuppertal, where the company is based, Pina is an inspiring and uplifting celebration of Bausch’s powerful creative legacy.

The film will be introduced by dancer and choreographer Sapphire Sumpter, who grew up in Helston before moving to London to study at vocational ballet school and at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Since returning to Cornwall last year, Sapphire has worked as a freelance dancer with several Cornwall-based dance companies, and with the inclusive arts charity Shallal. She has recently founded her own dance company Numinous, creating choreographic work as well as offering dance classes and courses.
