In May 2022, CAST presented a third Art Lab programme for schools, this time delving into the work and creative practice of studio-holder Nicola Bealing. Nicola’s colourful and intriguing paintings explore cultural memory and myth and are inspired by her travels, as well as storybooks and folklore she encountered as a child.
Schools were offered a full ‘Art Day’ at CAST, an increase from the previous half-day workshops, to allow children the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Nicola’s creative process from start to finish. The day began with a studio visit, curated display and audio-visual presentation, throughout which the children were encouraged to gather and draw in their sketchbooks. In the afternoon these recordings were then used to create vibrant paintings inspired by Nicola’s collections, and the resulting eclectic mixture of artworks were shared and reflected on as a group.
The workshop had strong ties to the national art curriculum, as well as to other subjects such as geography, literature, history and the natural sciences, and was adjusted to suit both KS1 and KS2 learning.

There were many highlights to the day: being able to explore Nicola Bealing’s studio was such a privilege and inspired so many of the year 5 class; it was a real eye opener for them to experience and explore the work a ‘real-life’ artist and be able to see paintings and sculptures by a professional artist ‘in the flesh’. For many of the children this was the first time they have been able to view art up close. After two years of lockdown and restricted access to public places, this was such a valuable experience for them.
The space provided at CAST is fantastic and so carefully thought out to maximise the children’s experience. The black box area is a magical sensory space allowing the children to feel totally immersed in art. The film of Nicola’s early life was fascinating and inspired the children. […] The workshops provided the right balance of reflection time and practical activities. The pace of the learning was good and the children were engaged throughout the day due to the high quality of the teaching from Kate and Lucy. The resources were all lovely and the thrill of using something different than at school was exciting.
