CAST developed out of a series of contemporary art conventions and workshops for artists and special projects continue to be a core part of the organisation’s work. These pages document our projects and offer written, audio and video records of some of the content produced.
The Building Stones of Helston
This illustrated booklet offers a guided walk around the historic town centre of Helston, looking back into the deep geological past of the building stones used in the town’s exceptional built heritage.
Wind, Tide & Oar
Using a 1960s hand-wound camera, Huw Wahl shot Wind, Tide & Oar over a three-year period. In that time he followed a diverse array of traditional boats and the people who sail them as they journey through rivers, along coastlines and across open seas.
Marcus Coates
The Directors is a collaboration between artist Marcus Coates and five individuals in recovery from different lived experiences of psychosis. Positioned behind the camera, each of them directs Coates in a filmed re-staging of a particular episode from their life.
Clay Country
This film by Yusof Abdul-Rahman is the outcome of a series of meetings and conversations initiated by CAST and by journalist Kate de Pury. Artist Richard Wentworth and historian Ivor Bowditch explore Cornwall’s china clay industry and how, to this day, it shapes the region’s landscape, culture and experience.

As part of CAST’s programme of Artist’s Choice screenings, each artist prepares an introduction to their selected film.
Water and Stone
Water and Stone is a three-day event comprised of walks, talks, workshops and demonstrations celebrating and exploring Helston’s built heritage.

Groundwork
