Following the overwhelming popularity of the first year, CAST-Off returned in summer 2021 with artist-led activities at two locations: the walled garden at National Trust Penrose and a small wood on the edge of town near the Bulwark estate. Eight sessions took place between 3 and 28 August, attended by 2,400 participants.

In the walled garden, activities included pigment and dye making, serpentine polishing, pinch pottery, clay modelling, bug making, wood construction, kite making, cyanotype printing, paper making, wild weaving and granite bashing. In the wood – ‘Ben’s Den’ – families built impressive dens, constructed bug hotels and created clay pots.

As in 2020, sessions took place on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout August. CAST’s learning specialist Lucy Grant designed a beautiful new activity map with lots of things for children to do and discover in their own time, including a number of challenges and tasks with small prizes for children who completed them.

CAST-Off 2021 was supported by Helston Town Council, Little Parc Owles Trust, the Garcia Family Foundation, FEAST and Falmouth University.

We should especially like to thank the Garcia Family Foundation, which enabled us to initiate the CAST-Off programme during the pandemic and has made it possible for us to continue the programme since that time.
